The Dallas Boogie, aka the "My Dougie" dance

Have you heard about the Dallas Boogie? Me either, but apparently it's sweeping Dirty South hip-hop clubs across the city. Found out about it last night while chatting with some of the Definition DJ's, a local DJ collective who say they're the ones who broke My Dougie in the clubs. (It comes from Lil Wil, a Dallas native.)

A high-spirited demonstration of the dance is below. The Definition DJ guys say you can do it to any song, as long as it's between about 75 and 85 bpm. Everyone does it differently -- as YouTube can attest -- but it basically involves planting your feet, bouncing your shoulders, and running a hand over your head, "I'm-so-fresh" style.

Dallas DJ Prince William back on the horse

prince william.jpg

As we mentioned in Quick a few days ago, Prince William recently lost a bunch of his DJ equipment during a home invasion. Friends held a benefit last Thursday at the Double Wide, and the DJ -- who you've probably seen around, he's usually the tallest guy in the room -- managed to raise about $1,000.

The next day at The Party, where PW is known to frequent, "people kept walking up to him and giving him money," says Sober, one of the Party DJs.

A few thoughts from a grateful Prince:

I pledge allegiance to dallas which is the coolest mother(expletive) city on the planet. i promise to give all that love back to my people in any way i can. that was an amazing night of music and i swear its even worth the loss just for that.

the money will probably go towards paying off the debt i had for the newest macbook i had bought a few months ago and am still paying on.
the money will clear up my credit and allow me to go ahead and bite the bullet and get one of those new boys (macbook pro) that coincidentaly dropped the same week as my benefit. i barely even look at it as a loss. im gonna update all my gear and have a very precisely edited and organised playlist to build my dj sets up from.

alot of big works coming this year. Lookout for Hawatha Hurd's Plastic Money mixtape and also the damaged good$ l.p. on big dada

A Q&A with Centro-matic's Will Johnson

Quick photo by Jason JanikI was fortunate to be able to chat it up with Centro-matic frontman Will Johnson last week for a Q&A that appeared in today's Quick. He'd been in Argyle working on a secret project with one of his favorite songwriters, whom he didn't want to name just yet. But I wasn't really calling him about that -- I wanted to pick his brain about Dual Hawks, the new Centro-matic/South San Gabriel double disc coming in April.

I've been listening to an advance copy nonstop for days now, and I go back and forth on which disc is my favorite. Right now, it's the South San Gabriel side. It starts off with "Emma Jane," one of Johnson's most evocative ballads to date (it's up on MySpace). Johnson accurately described the SSG disc as "a night-timer."

Read more of what he had to say, and make plans to attend the Granada show featuring music from Dual Hawks (plus an opening set by Robert Gomez) on Saturday.

Battle of the Bands: Suh-weet 16

Oooh, it's gonna be good ...

Head on over to our band-battle site to see which acts were voted through to the third round. We've got some eyebrow-raising matchups going:

Record Hop vs. Bridges and Blinking Lights: Two of the most compelling live acts in North Texas. I say we set up two stages and let this one happen offline.

Lovie vs. Midlake: These girls have kicked ass and taken names so far, but can they withstand The Trials of Van Occupanther?

The Slack vs. the Backsliders: Both very hard-working bands, despite their names.

Look at more match-ups and vote, since you are already in a voting mood anyway.
