Last night: Public Enemy at Ghostbar

It was an interesting crowd last night -- hip-hop heads in tees and jeans, AFI-ers with lanyards around their necks (dudes, you can take them off), Ghostbar-y ladies in short dresses and stilettos.

A stage was set up to the left of the DJ booth, just like with the Erykah Badu show. But the crowd this time was definitely more mixed. We got there around 11:30; P.E. took the stage about a half-hour later.

Professor Griff came on first, getting the crowd hyped up, backed by DJ Lord. He told everyone that Chuck D was in the room, and that they were going to take everyone back tonight, and to prepare ourselves for a long show. Lord spun a few songs and then suddenly, Chuck D appeared onstage. No fanfare or anything. I guess that's how he rolls.

Chuck D looked a tad older than he did in his heyday, but the man can still control an audience. He bellowed into the mic and gestured with his hands, and sounded pretty much the same as he did in the 80's/90's. He went through a lot of the classics, including "Don't Believe the Hype," "Fight the Power" and "911 (is a joke)," the latter of which included a small tribute to Flava Flav. Occasionally he or Professor Griff would hold the mic into the audience so people could sing along, but most didn't know all the words. (Me, guiltily, included.)

We stayed for about an hour, and then my feet were killing me and I wanted to go home. Glad I went though.

Alas, I have no pics for you, because I moved and can't find my camera. My cell phone pics turned out horribly. If anyone has some, send 'em on and I'll post.
