I'd been reading about Drum and Bass Under the Stars at the Whisky Bar for a little while now. (Dallas Dance Music peeps: Yes, I'm a lurker.) The weekly event -- free for everyone -- has house music on the first floor provided by local Got House? DJs, and d-n-b on the rooftop patio.
While I'm not exactly a drum n' bass fanatic, I can appreciate it as a genre, especially because so few bars play it anymore. I finally had a free Thursday and stopped by last week.
Outside of paying $7 for parking in the lot behind the bar, I really liked it. They had a $1 Miller Light draft special until midnight. I bought my friend a drink and we sat out on the first floor patio, which has a big, comfy couch and chairs. House music wafted out the open door. Everyone wore jeans and tank tops and tees, and one couple even brought their dog.
Upstairs, a large fire burned in a fire pit, and people sat around it and talked. One dude even got on the mic and started spitting rhymes. (Which sounds like it could have been cheesy, but he was actually really good.) With my plastic cup of Miller Lite and the fire and the cold breeze, I felt like I was at a bonfire party on a beach somewhere. (This is the way a California girl thinks.) If only Greenville was really an ocean and not an artery clogged with traffic and bars.
Anyway, remember the place next time you're around town on a Thursday. It's worth a visit if you like finding stuff outside the mainstream.
