When Carter Albrecht was killed last September, his band Sorta was close to finishing sessions for a new album with local engineer Stuart Sikes. This set of songs would be the country-rock band's fifth full-length release. But it was understandably put on the shelf while Albrecht's bandmates and closest friends dealt with his loss.
It appears now that the guys are ready to let these songs be heard, as they recently announced on their Web site that the new album will be released in September. It's called, simply, Sorta, and while there was some work done on the songs after Albrecht's death, the recordings of his parts weren't touched.
There's a heartfelt article by writer Richard Skanse on the site, that provides a glimpse at the process of finishing the album without Albrecht:
For the album-closing song 'Afraid of the Dark,' a group of friends was brought in to sing the ... 'it's over' refrain through tears as Albrecht's pre-recorded guitar line answered back through the studio speakers. Neither that song nor any of the others were written about their late friend, though of course, for all involved, the entire album will forever play like a bittersweet benediction -- not only for Albrecht, but for the band Sorta itself.
